Air Conditioners

This item is banned from disposal in the trash in Vermont by state law and requires special recycling, which is separate from curbside, or blue-bin, recycling.

Disposal Options

Air conditioners are accepted year-round at the District Transfer Station, where they are processed to remove hazardous materials. Once processed, these units are recycled.

Have an air conditioner or other CFC-containing appliance that’s too big to remove from your location? Call a local appliance repair company or HVAC (air conditioning) service company. They may be able to remove the CFC for you so that a hauler can cut up the appliance for removal. Do not attempt to remove CFC yourself. CFC is toxic, and is subject to specific removal regulations.

Cost

Appliances with CFCs

  • Refrigerator, freezer, window A/C, water fountain, vending machine, dehumidifier: $15 each
  • Commercial-Grade A/C units & outdoor residential A/C units: At cost
